The GMI Family Mediation / FDR Toolbox

Developed by Mediators for Mediators

The GMI Family Mediation/FDR Toolbox aims to be practical and useful for Family Mediators/FDRPs. This GMI Family Mediation / FDR Toolbox has been developed by two experienced Family Mediators (one of whom is an FDRP) based on their professional practice and expertise; and the strategies, skills, techniques and handouts they have found useful for their practice over the past 30 years.

Cognitive Understanding

Family Mediators / FDRPs can enhance their toolbox through cognitive understanding and through practice and use of these tools. The GMI Family Mediation /FDR Toolbox is available as a PDF and enables ease of use to print out materials to be used when meeting with clients or preparing for a session.

The Right Tool

Like any tool in a professional toolbox for any profession, no one tool works for all matters, and any particular tool should not be used routinely in any Family Mediation / FDR session. The Family Mediator /FDRP should be constantly assessing the party dynamics; procedural needs and the substantive matters and level of conflict / common ground between the parties and should make a hypothesis of what tool may be helpful and the purpose of why a particular tool may be of assistance in any given situation / time in the Family Mediation / FDR session.

50 Tools

The GMI Family Mediation / FDR Toolbox contains 50 tools which includes:

  • Handouts: which can be shared with parties to present information
  • Checklists: which can be used by parties to prepare for mediation sessions
  • Notes: for family mediators / FDRPs to assist with preparing for mediation or during the session
